Oral and Maxillofacial Pathologist,

Nicolette Essian, DMD, CFNC, MS

Dr. Nicolette Essian is an Oral and Maxillofacial Pathologist certified in functional nutrition and laser safety in dentistry. She completed her specialty training and master’s program at UNC Adams School of Dentistry in Chapel Hill, NC and has returned to the suburbs of Detroit, MI where she was born and raised. Dr. Essian grew up with a father as a general dentist and always knew she wanted to become a healthcare provider. Her education began at the University of Detroit Mercy where she earned her bachelor’s degree in biochemistry. While attending dental school at Midwestern University-Illinois, she took on a strong interest in oral pathology which focuses on the manifestations of systemic diseases. As an oral pathologist, Dr. Essian is able to make both clinical and histopathologic diagnoses, as well as manage patients with infectious, autoimmune, or other chronic systemic conditions that present in the oral and maxillofacial region. As a new member of Summit Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Dr. Essian will be able to accept referrals for patients with developmental, infectious, or autoimmune-related changes of the head and neck. This may include the scope of facial pain, oral sores or ulcers, dry or burning mouth, and taste disturbances. She may perform minor laser-assisted soft tissue biopsies, cytology smears, or laser ablation therapy for biopsy-confirmed dysplasia. The management of patients may include prescribing medications, introducing lifestyle or nutrition modifications, and ordering blood tests. Dr. Essian is very passionate about her field. Her long-term goal is to improve the overall health and well-being of patients living with chronic illnesses, to reduce the risk of oral cancers, and to identify pre-malignant changes early. Dr. Essian is excited to collaborate with our oral surgeons and referring dentists to achieve greater efficiency and care for our patients.
